Alaska 2004 -- Day 12
Day 12, Thursday June 10 ~ Fairbanks to Kennicott
We drove under threatening skies from Fairbanks to Chitina in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park via the Richardson Highway. We paralleled the Alyeska Pipeline much of the way. At the Chitina airport we left our vans, and with limited luggage, we flew in two small (5-6 passenger) chartered planes to McCarthy. From there a van shuttled us to the Kennicott Glacier Lodge in the old copper mining town of Kennicott. Most of the buildings are old mine buildings and are falling apart having been abandoned about 1943. After dinner and in a drizzle we had a guided walking tour of Kennicott.
