September 9 - Castlerotto = Kastelruth

After a leisurely breakfast we packed up and checked out from our Bolzano hotel and went to the nearby town square where a local band was performing as part of a music festival.  We then went to the bus station to catch a bus to Kastelruth (German or if you prefer Castelrotto in Italian). As we left Bolzano the bus had to stop frequently as there apparently was some family bike event going on. There were hundreds, many with balloons, and some of the younger ones were on balance bikes. We arrived just before noon to this small but very charming town. We went to our hotel which was built in 1326. It clearly has been significantly upgraded since. As our room wasn't ready yet we left our baggage there and wandered about a bit looking for lunch.

Adjacent to a chair lift at the edge of town we found this schematic of the area.  Kastelruth is in the valley at the bottom of the picture.  Above is the Alpe di Suisi plateau where we did a hike on the next day.  We got there by taking a bus to Suisi the town to the right and then a gondola up to the plateau.

A bit after 6, we noticed that there was a black cloud over the far mountains and a very large rainbow. Here the sun was shining.|
