September 2022 Ramanessin Fossil Hunt

September 17, 2022

On this beautiful early fall day, the Friends of Holmdel Open Space (FOHOS) and Citizens for Informed Land Use (CILU) together sponsored a fossil hunt along the Ramanessin Brook which flows from the Arts Center south through Holmdel to the Swimming River Reservoir. The reservoir is the main source of Holmdel’s drinking water.

We were joined by local geologist and fossil hunter, Dr. Jim Brown, for an unforgettable adventure into the Cretaceous period, a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and New Jersey was submerged beneath a shallow inland sea. The large group (we had over 90 participants) got its feet wet as we spread out and walked through the Ramanessin stream-bed searching and sifting for fossils. Many shark teeth and other unique items were found and taken home.
