One day we drove up a narrow partially paved road and then when it became too rocky and rutty we walked uphill to Pic Paradis, at 1400′ the high point of St. Martin:
The summit was covered with a number of antennas and surrounded by a locked fence:
From there we had views to the east:
In the distance one could see Ilet Pinel and Orient Bay:
Also Galion Bay with its “swimming pool”:
Another day we did go to Galion Bay which is part of a marine nature reserve. The calm warm water was very shallow and rarely more than 2′ deep. There was some coral and some fish.
Just outside the bay the shore was very rocky and showed evidence of the volcanic origin of the island:
Then we went a bit further north to Orient Bay and Beach:
This was totally barren, and devoid of any people 50 years ago. No more:
Another excursion was to The Butterfly Farm where they raised many kinds of butterflies and moths:
