Hiking on the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee

Part 1: Saturday, June 25-Monday June 27, 2011

Saturday, June 25: Low Gap, US421 to McQueens Gap, USFS 69

Section Totals: 3.7 miles and 701' of elevation gain

Jenni and Ralph left home on Friday and drove to near Roanoke where they spent the night.  Pete and June left home on Thursday and flew to Washington/Baltimore and then drove to Vienna Virginia where they visited Beth, Jon, Liam, Nora and Mary.  All four rendezvoused at the Bear's Den rental lodgings in Damascus, Virginia, at lunch time.  After lunch they walked this short section to shorten the length of the last section.  Dinner that evening was at the Whistling Pig.

Sunday, June 26-Monday, June 27: Wilbur Lake Road to TN 91

Section Totals: 16.1 miles and 2670' of elevation gain

Sunday morning we slowly packed up for a one-night backpack.  Then we spotted a car at the end of the section and while we drove to the beginning it poured.  Happily the rain stopped as we arrived at the trailhead.  We ate lunch and began our trek.

Jenni and Ralph got to the end first and then retrieved the other car.  Ralph then went ahead to Quincy's in Damascus to order pizza and a calzone.  The others arrived a few minutes later but had been delayed by a thunderstorm and a tree that fell across the road.
