We spent the night of June 5 at The Hike Inn near Fontana. In the morning of June 6, Jeff Hoch shuttled us to where the trail left the road beyond Fontana Dam and where we had ended a section hike in June of 2007. See June 2007 AT in North Carolina

June 7: Mollies Ridge Shelter to Spence Field Shelter; 5.4 mi. +1,477'
We stopped for a snack at the Russell Field Shelter. This one hasn't been renovated and has a "bear fence" to keep the bears out and the people in.

We got to the shelter early and had lunch. Much of the afternoon it rumbled and occasionally sprinkled and we relaxed and read. We also chatted with National Trails Day volunteers from the Smokey Mountains Hiking Club that were working on the trail nearby. |
