Hiking in the White Mountains of New Hampshire
August 16-18, 2007
August 16: Crawford Notch to Zealand Falls Hut
We started up the Avalon Trail and then took the A-Z (Avalon to Zealand)
over the notch between Mt. Tom and Mt. Field to Zealand Pond. Then a short
but steep uphill climb on the Twinway brought us to the hut where we spent the
night.

August 18: Galehead Hut to ?
Our plan had been to hike along the Garfield Ridge over Mts. Garfield and Lafayette to Greenleaf Hut and then the next day down the Old Bridle Path to Lafayette Place where our car was parked. However, in the night it rained. In the morning it was foggy and misty. Shortly after we started hiking the rain began again. We opted to go down instead of up and went down the Gale River Trail. Two hitches later we were at our car which we drove to the Highland Center. That day the Cog and the Mt. Washington auto road were closed because of ice and there were reports of hail on the Crawford Path. Not a good day to be hiking on the ridges.
